How DLS is Supporting Sustainable Urban Logistics
DLS plays a key role in the Solent Future Transport Zone (FTZ) Sustainable Urban Logistics program. Here’s what DLS has been working on:
- Finding the Right Locations: DLS has teamed up with local authorities to identify the best locations for micro-logistics hubs. By conducting site visits and assessments, DLS ensured that each location is a good fit for a logistics operation.
- Engaging with the Industry: DLS has helped promote Solent Transport’s projects, engaging with the logistics sector to test ideas and secure a trusted operator for the Portsmouth micro-logistics hub.
- Navigating Planning Approvals, Consents and Regulations: From securing planning permission for Winchester’s micro-logistics hub to working with councils on fire safety and other requirements, DLS ensures a fully compliant micro hub.
- EV Expertise: With our knowledge of electric vehicle technology and charging infrastructure, we’ve helped design sustainable solutions tailored to micro-logistics hubs.
Portsmouth Micro Logistics Hub: Leading the Trial
In summer 2024, Decarbon Logistics Solutions (DLS) was appointed to oversee a 12-month trial of the Portsmouth Micro Logistics Hub. Ahead of the launch, DLS played a key role in identifying and securing a suitable location at Hilsea Industrial Estate. The team finalised site details, designed the hub layout, coordinated the fit-out process, and assisted with selecting an operator to ensure everything was ready for operations. Once live, DLS’s role will include:
- Overseeing day-to-day operations, ensuring everything runs smoothly and producing performance reports.
- Managing infrastructure installation and maintenance.
- Supporting marketing efforts to showcase the benefits of the trial.
- Acting as the main point of contact for Portsmouth City Council.
- Providing regular updates on progress, challenges, and opportunities.
- Ensuring a seamless transition at the end of the trial—whether that means decommissioning or planning for long-term use.
